TEMPE, AZ — Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP), a national construction management firm and general contractor, has named Michael Smith as Project Executive for its Southwest division. As Project Executive, Smith will lead AP Southwest’s complex, large-scale projects to ensure construction quality and act as a key contact for clients. He will also develop new business with prospective clients and assist AP’s corporate leadership with long-range business planning.

“In the past year alone, AP has invested heavily in growing its presence in the Southwest, one of the country’s hottest markets for commercial construction,” said Scott Salyer, Vice President of Operations for AP Southwest. “Bringing on Michael is just the next step in that growth strategy, and we’re confident he’ll add to AP’s reputation as a quality builder, strengthen our client relationships, and help grow our project portfolio across a wide range of sectors.”

Smith has more than 20 years of project management experience in the commercial construction industry. Before joining AP, he served as a Senior Manager and Senior Project Manager with JLL, where he recently worked on the five-week renovation/conversion of a 57,000-square-foot warehouse in Phoenix into a space to ramp up production of N95 masks for the U.S. government in response to the pandemic. The project garnered national recognition from United States leadership and the client.

“AP has a national reputation as a top construction manager and general contractor, and I’m excited to help grow that reputation with owners, developers, and trade partners in the Southwest,” Smith said. “Our 30-year history in the market, trusted relationships, and the current boom in development across various sectors positions AP to deliver outstanding projects that achieve the vision of both existing and prospective clients throughout the region.”

In addition to his work on the Honeywell project, Smith managed operations across two sites — comprised of 33 buildings and 1.5 million square feet — and led the team responsible for $4.1 million in capital expenditure and vendor spend. As Senior Project Manager, he led teams and client project initiatives from initial scope/concept to design, permitting, construction, and closeout. Smith also developed and directed extended teams, providing project management on more than $50 million of contracts in 24 months for JLL.

Before his work with JLL, Smith served as a Project Executive with BCI National; Director of Construction with Armstrong Development; Senior Owner’s Representative with Extended Stay Hotels; Senior Project Manager with Eleven Western Builders; and Project Manager with WLC Architects, delivering various public works projects including 17 education entities, two fire stations, an aquatic center, and a neighborhood center.

“I am passionate about building infrastructure designed to positively impact communities in a way that endures for generations,” Smith said.

Smith studied finance and construction management at California State University - Sacramento and holds SafeStart, OSHA 511, and Army Corp of Engineers CQM certifications. Smith is a member of the Construction Managers Association of America and the Innovating Commerce Serving Communities, or ICSC (previously the International Council of Shopping Centers).

AP has maintained an office in Phoenix for 30 years and recently established a new Southwest region leadership team including Salyer, Directors of Business Development Melissa Bennett and Mark Mitchell, and Marketing Director Amara Boesch.
