The Manzanola Junior/Senior High School campus addition and renovation project involved a complete renovation of the original 1925 school building, which was built by Colorado architect Temple Buell. Prior to the renovation and addition, the 95-year-old building had limited classroom heating capabilities, housed asbestos, and needed extensive repairs. Wold facilitated the school’s master plan in 2016 and worked with the district to secure a Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant in 2019.
Nunn Construction and Vanir Construction Management served as construction partners, and Wold led the addition’s design, which is centralized around a two-story media center adjacent to the west facade of the building. This space serves as the heart of the school, and learning spaces are organized around it in two wings that mirror the original design. The layout creates an additional learning courtyard and an extension of the media center. The remainder of the addition includes fifth grade classrooms, new laboratories, a gymnasium, locker rooms, administrative spaces, and a lobby/reception area. The project was completed in the summer of 2022 before students began the 2022-23 school year.
“As a local firm, we’re proud to have led the design of Manzanola School District’s K-12 School renovation, and we are grateful to the A4LE Rocky Mountain Chapter for recognizing the success of the project’s design,” said Vaughn Dierks, AIA, LEED AP, Partner-in-Charge at Wold Architects and Engineers. “Innovative, successful renovation/additions like this one require a collaborative and forward-thinking team, and this project reflects the shared efforts of an excellent team that kept the district’s goals at the forefront of our work together.”
Grenier, Wold's Education Principal, was also awarded the Planner of the Year Dr. William R. Maclay Award for his work on the Manzanola project and across districts in Colorado. Grenier has nearly a decade of teaching experience and an understanding of how learning environments help students thrive. His passion for supporting students and educators helps ensure each district’s plan and design creates the best future for them.
