Denver International Airport Opens New West Security Checkpoint

DENVER, CO — Denver International Airport (DEN) recently opened its new 17-lane TSA security checkpoint on the terminal’s northwest end of Level 6. Global integrated design firm Stantec provided architecture, interior design, design management, and construction administration services for this second phase of DEN’s $2.1 billion Great Hall project. DEN served more than 77 million passengers in 2023, making it the third busiest airport in the U.S. for the year.

The West Security Checkpoint is the first of two new checkpoints being built on Level 6 of the Jeppesen Terminal as part of the Great Hall Program. The checkpoint consists of 17 screening lanes with advanced technology for a more efficient screening process. Some of the features of the new equipment include:

  • Allowing multiple passengers to place their items in bins simultaneously to help expedite the process
  • Enhanced technology that allows passengers to leave items like liquids and laptops in their bags
  • Automatic diversion of any carry-on bag that may contain a prohibited item, allowing other travelers’ belongings to continue through the screening process uninterrupted
  • Automatic bin returns to the front of the line with bigger bins to fit more items and larger bags

The East Security Checkpoint, also consisting of 17 screening lanes, will mirror the West Checkpoint. Construction of this checkpoint is already underway and will open by the end of 2025.

As part of the construction of the West Security Checkpoint, the balcony overlooking Level 5 was extended to add capacity for circulation. Additionally, a triple escalator taking screened passengers from Level 6 to the train platform on Level 4 was constructed.

“Reaching this milestone with Phase 2 will transform the travelers’ experience through one of the country’s busiest travel hubs,” said Carl Hole, Senior Principal at Stantec. “The partnership we’ve created with Denver International Airport will help them fulfill their Vision 100 strategic plan to prepare the airport to serve 100 million passengers annually over the next five to eight years and beyond.”
