McGough Development Wins Minnesota Brownfields ReScape Award

EDINA, MN — GZA GeoEnvironmental Inc. (GZA), a multi-disciplinary firm providing geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water, and construction management services, announces that its client, McGough Development of Roseville, Minnesota, was awarded the Minnesota Brownfields ReScape Award for the redevelopment of an environmentally impacted, underutilized industrial site to serve as its new corporate headquarters.

McGough, a construction and development company known for its complex historical restorations and renovations of Minnesota landmarks, won the Minnesota Brownfields ReScape Award for Economic Impact in the small project division. The award was given for its conversion of a 60-year-old former trucking terminal into a new headquarters for its 250 employees.

GZA’s Vieau Associates subsidiary was cited for its environmental services on the McGough project by Minnesota Brownfields alongside the other engineering and architectural firms that comprised the design team. GZA/Vieau performed Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments and ushered a Response Action Plan through the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s Voluntary Brownfields Program to help secure approvals needed for cleanup grant funding and long-term liability assurances.

The Vieau team provided comprehensive oversight during construction for hazardous materials abatement during demolition, contaminated soils management, and vapor mitigation system confirmatory testing.

“All of us at GZA offer congratulations to Vice President David Vieau and our colleagues in Minnesota for playing such an important role in this award-winning brownfields project," said GZA CEO and President, Patrick Sheehan. "The new McGough Company headquarters illustrates the full range of services GZA brings to bear on the successful redevelopment of distressed properties. We’re proud to play a key role in the economic development initiatives that rejuvenate the communities we serve.”

GZA/Vieau collaborated with a team of design and subcontractor partners based in the Twin Cities region, including HGA Architects and Engineers, Schadegg Mechanical, Gephart Electric, Twin City Glass, Fredrikson & Byron, and American Engineering & Testing. The City of Roseville’s Economic Development Authority supported the cleanup and revitalization of the property, and Bremer Bank provided project financing.

Minnesota Brownfields is a nonprofit organization established in 2006 that promotes, through education, research, and partnerships, the efficient cleanup and reuse of contaminated land as a means of generating economic growth, strengthening communities, and enabling sustainable land use and development.

GZA is a multi-disciplinary, employee-owned firm providing geotechnical, environmental, ecological, water, and construction management services. GZA’s more than 700 professionals are based in 30 offices in New England, the Mid-Atlantic, and the Great Lakes states.
