Some design is so good, it’s worthy of multiple awards. It’s just not often the awards come more than three decades apart. That is the case for a contemporary Indianapolis home first built in 1988 and originally designed by James W. McQuiston, AIA.

McQuiston earned an Honor Award in 1990 for the home. In January 2022, the American Institute of Architects Indianapolis presented ONE 10 STUDIO with AIA Indianapolis’ top Excellence Award for the renovation of the same home.

ONE 10 STUDIO was careful to maintain the original character of the 1988-designed, 4,600-square-foot, two-story home, while updating the home so its new owners could age in-place. That meant creating a main level master-suite, opening some of the living spaces, and creating a retreat-like setting within a neighborhood.

ONE 10 STUDIO also received a Citation Award for another Indianapolis home. Built in 2019, the modern design includes a butterfly habitat, hence its name, Papillon.

The third house to receive an AIA Indy Award is a hidden retreat near Saugatuck, Michigan. HAUS | Architecture for Modern Living received a Citation Award for the home design it created for an Indianapolis couple who decided to make their favorite vacation spot a home.

The AIA Indianapolis Excellence Awards were judged by a panel of architects from Charlotte, North Carolina.

RATIO received two Honor Awards, one for the design of a new headquarters for Wabash Valley Power Alliance and a second for the renovation of the Cummins’ global headquarters in Columbus.

Award winners, who were announced during the AIA Indianapolis Design Excellence Awards Gala on January 22 at the Indiana State Museum, are as follows:

RATIO received a Citation Award for transforming the former Coca-Cola Bottling Plant on into Bottleworks on Mass Ave. This project also received a People’s Choice Award, which was voted on by those attending the awards ceremony.

Luminaut|Rowland received a Citation Award for the Ingalls building, a former 16-story bank, which was the world’s first reinforced concrete skyscraper when it was built in 1903. Luminaut|Rowland transformed it into a Courtyard by Marriott.

RATIO received an Honor Award for its interior renovation of Cummins’ global headquarters in Columbus to create a more modern space for its employees. Every employee now works in an area with natural light and all resources, including meeting rooms and copy rooms, are no more than 50 feet from workstations in this 350,000-square-foot building. Cummins’ original “exploded engine” artwork by Rudolph de Harak was cleaned and restored and moved to a more prominent position in the lobby.

Luminaut|Rowland received a Merit Award for its design of Nostalgia Wine & Jazz Lounge in Cincinnati.

Blackline received a Citation Award for transforming a former box factory in Indy’s Windsor Park neighborhood into North Mass Boulder, a rock-climbing, fitness center and co-working space.

ONE 10 STUDIO received an Honor Award for its renovation of an Indianapolis home called Highland House. Originally designed by Indianapolis architect Jim McQuisten, AIA, who received a design award in 1988 for the home, ONE 10 STUDIO updated the home so its new owners could age in place.

Blackline received a Citation Award for its transformation of a 1915 Showers Brothers furniture factory into the Mill.

Luminaut|Rowland received a Citation Award for TownPlace Suites, a hotel in the Race Street Historic district of Cincinnati.

RATIO received a Merit Award for its design of an outdoor dining area and pavilion at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. The engineering school had a campus contest to name the space, and it’s now called Pi-Vilion.

ONE 10 STUDIO received a Citation Award for its design of an Indianapolis home, which has a butterfly habitat, hence its name, Papillon.

HAUS | Architecture For Modern Living received a Citation Award for a home designed near Saugatuck, Michigan.

RATIO received an Honor Award for the design of Wabash Valley Power Alliance’s headquarters in INTECH Park on Indianapolis’ northwest side. A leader in the utility and energy sector, Wabash Valley wanted an updated environment for employees as they work to develop new ways of advancing sustainability and conscious energy transmission. This state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot workplace, which opened in 2019, takes its curved form from the roundabout it sits behind, carefully placed on the edge of the wooded area to preserve as many of the trees as possible.

AXIS received a Merit Award for its design of the TCU Amphitheater at White River State Park, which was built on the site of a former slaughterhouse.

AXIS also received a Citation Award for its design of the Martindale-Brightwood Library, which is in the heart of the economically depressed historic Northeast neighborhood.
