The Coalition for Construction Safety (CCS) held its Anniversary and Awards Celebration in late April at the Scottish Rite Cathedral to recognize the safety achievements of those in the construction and contractor maintenance industry. Attendees enjoyed a fun evening with networking, food, and music.

A panel of judges reviewed the awards submissions and unanimously selected the winners. Companies, projects, and individuals were recognized. The judges were impressed with the safety efforts of all the submitters and were particularly impressed with the many innovative techniques and programs that companies are implementing to keep workers safe.

The 17 companies who participated in the Excellence in Safety Program by making a formal presentation to the judges' panel were recognized with a Safety Achievement Award.

  • BMWC Constructors
  • Charah
  • CMS Corporation
  • Gaylor Electric
  • Gribbins Insulation
  • GroundBreakers Hydrovac Excavation
  • Industrial Electric

  • Pepper Construction
  • Performance Contracting Group
  • Shiel Sexton Company

The judges then selected the top five programs who were recognized with a Safety Leader Award. The Safety Leaders were:

  • Charah
  • Industrial Electric
  • Pepper Construction
  • Shiel Sexton Company
  • Superheat FGH Services

Out of these companies, the judges unanimously chose Charah as the Excellence in Safety Award winner.

Nine construction projects were submitted for the Outstanding Project Safety Award. The projects were broken into two categories, small and large. Both the owner and contractor are recognized for their safety performance.

This year, for the small category, the judges selected the Scheumann Family Indoor Practice Facility. Ball State University is the owner and Messer Construction was the contractor.

For the large category, the judges selected Convert F/20006 for Program Executive Office, Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. The U.S. Government represented by the Air Force Civil Engineer Center and 88 Civil Engineer Group is the owner and CMS Corporation was the contractor.

The Safety Innovation Award was presented to Superheat FGH Services for their Superheat SmartCenter.

Steve Bestard of Messer Construction received the Board of Directors Award, which goes to a volunteer who has made significant contributions to CCS. Bestard served on the Board of Directors for six years and served as the Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee for four of those years. He has always been willing to help forward the mission of CCS.

The Burnie McGinnis Award is the highest honor that CCS bestows upon an individual and is given to someone who has made a significant impact on construction and contractor maintenance safety throughout his or her career. It is not given every year. The Burnie McGinnis was awarded to David Murphy of Pepper Construction. Murphy has dedicated the last three decades to ensuring that every tradesperson leaves the jobsite in the same condition as they arrived. He is known as a progressive leader who approaches safety from a place of empathy, rather than retribution.

The Zero Injury Award is given to companies that did not have a workplace injury or illness the previous year and submit an award application. This year's Zero Injury Award recipients were:
