Arrasmith’s experience in healthcare — including university lab, hospital and medical research facility design — will support the joined firm’s Healthcare Studio. Full-service healthcare architecture and engineering is now available in Indiana. Integrating the two firms will create an enhanced level of expertise, capacity, and service across a larger geographic area.
“We’re thrilled to welcome the Arrasmith team into the Schmidt Associates family,” said Sarah Hempstead, Principal and CEO of Schmidt Associates. “With this integration comes tremendous opportunity for growth and new pursuits that will benefit our clients and the communities in which we build.”
Schmidt Associates has a long-standing history in Indiana. Opening its doors in 1976, the firm moved to its current location on Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis in the early 1980s. It has played a role in the revitalization of this now booming cultural corridor. The firm is known for its work in education, both K-12 schools and higher education campuses across the state, as well as a focus on lifelong learning through community-centered projects.
Arrasmith, also known as AJRC, began in 1926 in Louisville, Kentucky. Over more than 90 years, the firm has served clients through architecture and planning in 28 states and seven countries. Its work spans a variety of sectors, with a focus on healthcare, workplace, and community-centered projects.

“Our firms each bring a rich history of design excellence to the table, allowing us to provide our clients with an even greater level of insight,” said John Robertson, partner at Arrasmith. “Our skills, cultures, and portfolios complement each other very well.”
The combined firm now totals approximately 110 employees across architecture, engineering, interior design, construction administration, and administrative functions. Both the Indianapolis and Louisville offices will remain in their current locations.
