BERKELEY, IL — Berkeley School District 87, Gilbane Building Company, and community members recently gathered to celebrate the completion of the new Sunnyside Intermediate and MacArthur Middle Schools. The new 162,000-square-foot building will support grade-level centers and allow for the growth of exploratory program offerings. Having two distinct and separate schools housed in one building will provide opportunities for blended interaction and shared functions of community use spaces.

“This new facility is a valued community asset that directly supports our strategic goals for promoting an inclusive learning environment, attracting and retaining high-quality staff, connecting with the community, and providing equitable resources,” said Dr. Daniel Sullivan, Berkeley School District 87 Superintendent.

Gilbane partnered with District 87, EOSullivan, Cor Strategies, PMA Financial Network, and Wold Architects to support the $105 million referendum in spring 2020 before progressing into design and construction. The complete program brings transformative and historic improvements to the district. Additional work includes the renovation of Riley Intermediate and Northlake Middle Schools and an addition connecting the two schools into one building.
