The new Dynapac CC2200 VI Asphalt Roller with SEISMIC technology recently completed a rigorous set of tests throughout Europe and the United States, including a major highway project for Superior Paving Corp. of Gainesville, Virginia.

Michael Washington, a roller operator at Superior Paving, highlighted the roller’s impact on the project.

“We're doing the base asphalt layer on Interstate 95, which runs from Florida to Maine,” he said. “The highway has been undergoing significant widening in Virginia to accommodate increasing traffic, especially toward Washington, D.C. The CC2200 VI roller with SEISMIC technology has been crucial for the final compaction of the base, intermediate, and topping layers. Its variable compaction mechanism ensures the right amount of compaction with minimal passes.”

Superior Paving’s work with the CC2200 VI roller is part of the 10-mile-long 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension, one of several projects undertaken in the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) nearly $1 billion Improve 95 mega-project around Fredericksburg, an hour south of Washington, D.C.

The 95 Express Lanes Fredericksburg Extension added two reversible, high-occupancy toll lanes in the existing median of I-95 to reduce congestion and accommodate a higher travel demand more efficiently. VDOT anticipates the express lane extension will increase I-95 roadway capacity by 66 percent during rush hour periods.

Construction of the design-build project began in spring 2019, and the new lanes opened in December 2023.

User-Friendly Operation
The new CC2200 VI roller with SEISMIC technology is one of many Dynapac machines used by Superior Paving. Founded in 1976, the company employs a high percentage of people who have been with them more than 30 years, as well as many sons and daughters of the original team. In addition to their Gainesville headquarters, Superior Paving operates 10 asphalt plants throughout the northern Virginia area. VDOT ranks as their largest customer.

“They’re an innovative company that is always ready to embrace new technologies to improve their operations," said John Rocca, Territory Manager for All Roads Equipment in Bealeton, Virginia. “When we told them about this new technology, they wanted to try it.”

According to Andreas Persson, Lead Engineer within applications for Dynapac, “The operation of this system is straightforward and user-friendly. The operator simply selects the high or low amplitude setting, and the machine manages the rest. This simplicity allows the operator to concentrate on navigating the track and ensuring safety, without the need for complex inputs or adjustments. It's all about ease of use — just set the amplitude, and you're ready to go."

Washington experienced that himself while operating the new Dynapac roller.

“It just seems like a well-balanced machine,” he said. “It comes to a slow stop and reduces bumps in the mat. The 360 camera helps me to be safer on the job site. The suspension seat is also a plus; I’m very refreshed at the end of the day.”

The CC2200 VI weighs 7.6 tons and features a 59-inch drum, which is ideal for finish rolling on a variety of job sites. It includes a Tier 4 Final diesel engine with a high torque setting, efficient patented eccentric weights, and an ECO Mode for fuel efficiency. SEISMIC technology is designed to further optimize compaction efficiency, reduce fuel consumption, and enhance operator comfort.

"The SEISMIC technology allows us to achieve consistent density across the mat, even close to the edges, which is usually challenging," said Evan Pugh, a Density Tech QA at Superior Paving.

Efficiency in Diverse Conditions
Before rolling out the new CC2200 VI system, "We conducted extensive tests to ensure its performance in various conditions,” Persson said. “This adaptability is crucial for different contractors working on diverse job sites around the globe. So far, the machine has performed well and achieved the desired compaction levels across the board.”

That includes positive results in Superior Paving’s work.

“Our company is always looking to use the best machinery possible to achieve the best results,” Washington said. “We pride ourselves on doing a quality job, so if there’s a machine out there that will give us an advantage to have a better end result, we’re going to take advantage of it.”

“They've got a bunch of young operators running the equipment who are eager to maximize their efficiency and meet new challenges head-on,” Rocca added. “The SEISMIC technology on the CC2200 VI roller is another tool they can use to stay on the forefront of the paving and compaction industry.”
