Indiana Constructors, Inc. (ICI) is the voice of the Hoosier highway, heavy, and utility construction industry. In 2024, ICI is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

At its final organizational meeting on February 4, 1924, the association's first Chairman — Paul J. Meredith of Meredith Highway Construction Co. in Indianapolis — offered William H. Holland the job of the Executive Secretary. Holland said he would take the job, but on three conditions:

  • The main objective of the association would be to stabilize the entire industry and strive for a strong, healthy, adequately financed highway program.
  • Every member would be treated equally. Honesty and integrity would prevail.
  • There must be at least 25 companies in the association.

At the time, ICI only had 23 members, so Holland picked up the phone on his desk. Within five minutes, the association had its 25 members.

ICI set out with the original 25 contractor members and quickly blossomed with the addition of subcontractor and associate members — those businesses providing vital products, services, and equipment to contractors. Through mergers and acquisitions, many of these original members are still active in the association.

Regardless of their join date, each ICI member has played a special role in helping the association reach 100 years. In turn, the association congratulates those members who have also reached the 100-year mark:

  • US Aggregates (formerly Meshberger Stone) (1874)
  • Gregory & Appel Insurance, Inc. (1884)
  • Heidelberg Materials (formerly Lehigh Hanson) (1902)
  • Kahn, Dees, Donovan, & Kahn, LLP (1908)
  • Brooks Construction Co., Inc. (1909)
  • Ice Miller LLP (1910)
  • Rieth-Riley Construction Co., Inc. (1916)
  • Buzzi Unicem USA (1919)
  • Phend & Brown, Inc. (1922)

From its humble beginnings in 1924, Indiana Constructors, Inc. has grown to represent 198 members from every region of the state and beyond. In honor of its centennial, ICI thanks its member companies as of June 1, 2024, for their commitment to the association’s first 100 years and their vision for the next.
