Officials Cut the Ribbon on US 82 Greenville Bypass

YAZOO CITY, MS — Officials joined Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons to cut the ribbon on the massive U.S. Highway 82 Greenville Bypass project. The bypass was then designated as the “Anse Dees Memorial Bypass.”

Work began in 2022 and called for construction of nearly 16 miles of four-lane highway from Leland to the Mississippi River Bridge. In addition to the new four-lane highway, the project provides grading, paving, bridge repairs, and installation of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) components along the U.S. 82 Greenville Bypass. The ITS components consist of cameras, Dynamic Message Boards, and fiber cable laid throughout the length of the project.

The bypass removes vehicles carrying chemicals and other hazardous products from the residential and business community along U.S. 82 in Greenville, Mississippi, alleviating traffic and improving overall driving conditions throughout Washington County. It is anticipated that approximately 800 large trucks will be diverted to the bypass daily. In addition to safety benefits, the bypass is estimated to save an average of 15 to 20 minutes of drive time for motorists along U.S. 82, further reducing traffic congestion and overall travel efficiency.

“Greenville is unique in that it is a port city. It has an airport, it has a rail system, public transportation — all the modes of transportation we deal with. Through projects like this, Greenville is going to expand, and as a result you are going to see opportunity and development in the Mississippi Delta,” Simmons said. “Now, we look forward to working with these leaders here in the Greenville and Washington County area to make sure that we benefit and take advantage of all the opportunities that are coming.”

The Port of Greenville processes the largest volume of raw products in the delta region with over 5 million tons of cargo transported annually. The Greenville Bypass promotes economic development by reducing travel times for freight vehicles traveling through the western side of the state while bringing more jobs and commerce to the Mississippi Delta region.
