Superior Construction Awarded Next Phase of Suncoast Parkway 2 Phase 3A Extension Project in Florida

CITRUS COUNTY, FL — Superior Construction will build 5.5 miles of new highway through Citrus County as part of the Suncoast Parkway 2 extension, continuing this transportation corridor from the Tampa area toward Crystal River, Florida. This third phase (3A) of the project will create a new segment of four-lane divided roadway from County Road 486 to County Road 495 in Citrus County.

Superior will self-perform the majority of the work, including mass grading, construction of 10 bridge structures, installation of nearly 250,000 square feet of mechanically stabilized earth walls, drainage systems, and roadway construction. Additional elements include toll facilities, lighting, and traffic signals. Superior plans to mobilize the same project team that successfully completed Phase 2 of the project approximately 470 days ahead of schedule.

“This next phase builds on the successful relationship we’ve established with the Florida Turnpike Enterprise and our other partners,” said Matt Stuart, Tampa Area Manager for Superior Construction. “Collaboration has been key to our success. When challenges come up, we work together to find solutions.”

Phase 1 of the project, a 13-mile extension from U.S. 98 to SR 44 in Lecanto, Florida, was completed in 2021. Superior then constructed Phase 2 from SR 44 to County Road 486, which was completed in August 2025. As it did during Phase 2, Superior is partnering with construction engineering and inspection firm Volkert.

The team faces unique engineering challenges due to the area’s karst topography, which includes limestone formations that have eroded over time, creating potential sinkholes. Superior will perform extensive ground improvements to ensure a stable foundation for the highway and bridge structures. Work is scheduled to begin later this year, with completion expected in January 2030.
