Griffin Electric Supports Women in Construction

HOLLISTON, MA — An electrical contractor throughout New England and the Southeast for nearly five decades, Wayne J. Griffin Electric, Inc. (Griffin Electric) recognizes the contributions of women in the construction industry and is facilitating opportunities for education and career growth. The company also strives to help grow the skilled trade workforce by promoting the trades as a viable career path.

Griffin Electric actively participates in a number of school visits and career fairs throughout the year, targeting a mix of both vocational and traditional schools. Over the past year, the company participated in nearly 80 of these events across New England alone. High school students have been typically steered toward a traditional college degree, and Griffin Electric continues to build awareness about apprenticeship as another pathway to a career.

For over 30 years, many women and men have navigated through Griffin Electric's in-house Apprenticeship Training Program. The fully accredited, state-approved program is a debt-free alternative to traditional schooling and guides apprentices toward becoming electricians or telecom technicians. Offered at its Holliston, Massachusetts, headquarters and each of its Southeast offices in Alabama, Georgia, and North Carolina, apprentices experience classroom instruction and on-the-job learning throughout the four-year program. Apprentices earn compensation, full benefits, and are eligible for wage increases every six months, based on grades and work performance.

To further promote awareness and improve interest in the trades, Griffin Electric conducts outreach to organizations comprised of underrepresented groups, including Women in the Building Trades and Women Veterans Network, among others.

Griffin Electric also offers complimentary personal and career development-related courses to employees. The company provides employees with $2,000 annually in tuition reimbursement to pursue additional educational opportunities in support of career objectives. Griffin Electric created its own development program geared toward enhancing leadership effectiveness. The company also offers an associate degree program for licensed graduates of its apprenticeship program, covering up to 70 percent of tuition costs.
