Shawmut Marks Women in Construction Week With Events Recognizing Industry Accomplishments and Leadership

BOSTON, MA — The employee-owners of Shawmut Design and Construction, a $2.3 billion national construction management firm, joined the weeklong celebration of Women in Construction with site tours, leadership discussions, and programming that highlights workforce development and the vital role women play in the industry.

A packed lineup of events for Women in Construction Week included job site tours of women-led projects, panel discussions, social outings, and other programming held in several regional offices including Boston, Massachusetts; New York, New York; Miami, Florida; Los Angeles, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Providence, Rhode Island; and Bentonville, Arkansas.

Shawmut kicked off the week with a company-wide virtual discussion based on this year’s theme — Level Up, Build Strong — highlighting continued growth, resilience, and excellence while together building a stronger future.

“Women are helping shape the future of construction at every level of our industry," said Les Hiscoe, CEO of Shawmut. "Women in Construction Week is an important opportunity to recognize their leadership and accomplishments, but at Shawmut we know this work continues year round. We are proud to support the growth, mentorship, and advancement of women across our teams as we build stronger projects, stronger partnerships, and a stronger industry.”

Highlights from the week included:

  • Project tours of Shawmut sites with women leaders, including Boston University’s Warren Towers — a $550 million renovation of the nation’s second-largest non-military dormitory; Brimmer and May School’s new 26,000-square-foot Wellness Center in Newtown, Massachusetts; Atria Health primary care practice in Beverly Hills, California; Greystone Elementary, a new 76,000-square-foot, two-level facility in North Providence; Martin Middle School, a $128 million school in East Providence; and Loewe on the Las Vegas strip, a complete remodel inside a shopping center, which includes approximately 3,500 square feet of stone, Venetian plaster, and custom millwork
  • Regional events, including presentations on the history of women in construction, a skill-swapping event, and discussions with trade partners
  • A panel on a project driven by women for the next generation of women: the ongoing renovation of the Brearley School, the all-girls school on Manhattan’s Upper East Side
  • A lunch conversation hosted by Kim Bishop, Shawmut’s Chair of the Board

Shawmut’s year-round commitment to workforce development includes ongoing initiatives focused on pay and promotion equity, leadership development, inclusive mentorship, and creating safer, more inclusive job sites through its safety program.
