ANN ARBOR, MI — The University of Michigan Health recently celebrated the completion of the 690,000-square-foot D. Dan and Betty Kahn Health Care Pavilion with a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The university's newest hospital is now open to the public and welcomed its first patients, after a decade of planning and hard work. The building represents the latest in human-centered health care.

The 12-story facility is Michigan Medicine’s largest increase in adult inpatient capacity in 40 years, advancing the health system’s ability to provide specialized care, comprehensive medical training, and research.

Each of the hospital’s 264 private patient rooms is equipped for intensive care. The building has 20 operating rooms, an intraoperative MRI, three interventional radiology suites, and facilities for neurology services. Otolaryngology, oral maxillofacial surgery, spine care, cardiovascular medicine and surgery, and thoracic surgery are also among the hospital’s specialty care services.

“Hundreds of team members and patients shared ideas, experience, and expertise to create a vision for all that this innovative new hospital could be,” said Linda Larin, M.B.A., Chief Operating Officer for the Adult Hospitals.

Michigan Medicine leaders prioritized environmental sustainability when designing the pavilion, including use of construction materials, water- and energy-efficient infrastructure, and other key factors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the health care carbon footprint.

It is on track to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum Green Building Certification, the highest possible rating from the U.S. Green Building Council.

In addition to a tunnel that connects the pavilion to the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, the pavilion’s street-level entrance lobby is also connected to the Cardiovascular Center’s lobby. Both lobbies are on floor 3 because both facilities are built into a hillside, with several levels below the street.

Architectural design was by HOK and construction was managed by Barton Malow.
