“Skanska is very proud of this achievement. There were many key partners that worked together to reach this benchmark for sustainability,” said Ryan Clayton, Senior Vice President - General Manager of Skanska’s West Coast civil operation. “As the general contractor, we did our part by incorporating low emitting and recycled materials, temporary erosion control, social equity, and an understanding of greater environmental impacts into the engineering of the projects. Despite challenges, the engineering know-how and adaptability of our team led to the project’s success.”
“There was a lot that went into earning this certification,” said Thorvaldur Konradsson, Project Executive of Skanska’s West Coast civil operations. “As the Project Executive, the thing that stands out to me the most is the inventiveness of our team. Working towards LEED certification, our engineers piloted the use of the growing EC3 technology on the project. It allowed the team to understand the specification and procurement of low carbon options, so we could utilize our findings in the construction of the project. We initially targeted LEED Silver certification, but with the tools, collaboration with Sound Transit, and combination of team ingenuity, we are proud to say that the Lynnwood City Center station is the first Sound Transit project to earn LEED Gold certification.”
Specific achievements include the following:
- 30 percent energy cost reduction versus the ASHRAE 90.1 baseline, with advanced metering for real-time monitoring
- 34 percent indoor water use reduction through efficient fixtures versus EPA baseline
- 71 percent reduction in irrigation water use through native, drought-tolerant plant species versus EPA baseline
- 85 percent of open space covered in vegetation via pedestrian promenade, walkways, bike trails, and planting areas
- 81 percent of construction waste diverted from landfills
- 100 percent of paints, coatings, adhesives, sealants, flooring, ceiling, and insulation met LEED low-VOC requirements

Skanska would like to acknowledge Ryan Prescott, Kertu-Lilli Salumae, Mark Chen, Jimmy Mitchell, Kyle Pritzal, and Kimberly Christian, who were instrumental in receiving LEED Gold certification for the project.
This sustainability achievement comes ahead of the opening of the Lynnwood Link Extension on August 30. Skanska is constructing the Lynnwood Link Extension (L300) segment of the new light rail. L300 will consist of 3.7 miles of aerial guideway alignment and four new stations from Northgate into Snohomish County.
