Utah’s Provo 300 South Improved project was named a finalist in the America’s Transportation Awards competition.

The Utah Department of Transportation’s (UDOT) Provo 300 South Improved project was named a top 12 finalist in the 2025 America’s Transportation Awards competition, sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

“The America’s Transportation Awards shine a spotlight on the vital projects state DOTs deliver for their communities to enhance safety, expand mobility for users, deliver a better quality of life for residents and visitors, and keep our economy moving,” said AASHTO Executive Director Jim Tymon. “The America’s Transportation Awards competition continues to show us that state DOTs are able to transform communities in a variety of ways. And as Congress works toward a new federal surface transportation bill, lawmakers need to only look at the tangible benefits that states deliver to their customers through examples like these winners to see why robust federal funding to states is so important.”

Selected from 113 nominations by 35 state departments of transportation, the top 12 finalists compete for the competition’s final two awards. The Grand Prize will be chosen by an independent panel of judges, while the People’s Choice Award will be decided through online voting, weighted by state population. The public can vote once per day until 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time on November 17, 2025, at americastransportationawards.org.

AASHTO will reveal winners of the Grand Prize and People’s Choice awards at its annual meeting in November 2025. Each winner will receive a $10,000 cash award for a charity or transportation-related scholarship of their choice.

Faster Construction, Stronger Infrastructure

In response to increased use and aging infrastructure, UDOT partnered with Provo City, Utah, on the $20.7 million Provo 300 South (U.S. 89) project between University Avenue and 500 West.

To accelerate completion and minimize disruptions for traffic and local businesses, “UDOT worked with Provo City to allow for detours on local city streets to help expedite the relocation and reconstruction of several utilities along the corridor,” said Andrew Gwynn, Program Manager for UDOT’s Region Three. “This also allowed for a larger work zone and allowed multiple construction activities to occur at once while maintaining worker safety. This collaboration between UDOT and Provo helped the project finish ahead of schedule and on budget.”

Condie Construction Company, Inc., of Springville, Utah, competed the work, which included:

  • Replacing 300 South asphalt with durable, 12-inch concrete pavement
  • Upgrading the roadway drainage system with storm drain, curb, and gutter
  • Replacing aged underground utilities, including sewer and culinary water
  • Adding new pedestrian/bicycle crosswalks
  • Widening the sidewalks on both sides of 300 South
  • Adding on-street bicycle lanes in each direction
  • Installing bump-outs to reduce the crossing distance at intersections without painted crosswalks
  • Installing raised medians between blocks to improve safety
  • Reconstructing driveway approaches

The enhancements support access to the Utah Valley Express bus rapid transit line and integrate with Provo’s expanding multimodal network. The half-mile-long Provo 300 South Improved project was the third phase of reconstruction along 2.6 miles of 300 South and 500 West.
