The Mehdi Heydari CCM of the Year award program recognizes individuals for achievements throughout their careers. Judging was based on advocacy and representation of the certified construction manager program, contribution to the construction management industry, breadth of involvement in programs or projects, and professional reputation.
Zapata has worked on several key projects in the Gulf Coast region and around the country as a certified construction manager. These include the City of Miami capital improvement program, hurricane Katrina recovery, and Lake Isabella dam seismic retrofit support for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, General Services Administration public building service energy conservation, and earthquake recovery efforts in Puerto Rico supporting the U.S. Coast Guard.
Serving on CMAA’s professional development committee, Zapata helps to identify, develop, and provide ongoing educational programs informing members of issues related to the construction management process. His passion for teaching the principles of construction management led him to become one of CMAA’s first authorized trainers for the CCM course. The CCM certification represents the pinnacle for this discipline, and Zapata writes questions for the national CCM exam administered to hundreds of professionals annually. He also moderates technical sessions at the CMAA National Conference, and he is recognized by his peers as a leader in the industry.
“Lionel puts tireless work into both CMAA and HDR’s field services program,” said Laurie Roden, HDR’s Field Services Group President. “This award elevates HDR in the construction management industry, and it’s a positive reflection of the great work our teams are doing every day.”
