Angela Schedel
Angela Schedel
JACKSONVILLE, FL — Angela Schedel, Ph.D., P.E., joins HDR as its Director of Coastal Programs, based in Jacksonville, Florida. In this position, she will strengthen and accelerate the firm's efforts in helping communities face coastal zone impacts.

Schedel brings extensive experience in equipping the industry with hazard-resilient best practices. Her doctoral degree in civil engineering is focused on sea level rise adaptation, and she led teams in creating web applications for risk assessments and ecosystem restoration.

A civil engineer with a 24-year career in the U.S. Navy, she taught ocean engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy for nine years. While there, she served as the first woman Deputy Director of the engineering division. At the academy, she led hundreds of diverse faculty and staff, teaching engineering courses to 3,000 students each semester.

A former Navy helicopter pilot, Schedel was one of the first 10 instructor pilots to teach students in the new Sierra-model Seahawk. She served aboard ships in the Pacific Ocean and the Persian Gulf during two deployments, flying missions in logistics, search and rescue, and vertical replenishment. Other experiences included leadership positions at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. She was an Assistant Professor, Associate Chairman, and Executive Assistant within the academy’s Naval Architecture & Ocean Engineering Department. She contributed her engineering expertise to the academy’s first Sea Level Rise Advisory Council and the STEM outreach program for K-12 students.

In addition to her doctorate, she holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Maryland and a bachelor’s degree in ocean engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy.
