MISSOULA, MT — Preconstruction efforts are underway for Montana’s second progressive design-build project in its history, the US-93 Reconstruction Progressive Design-Build Project, led by the Sundt/Schellinger joint venture construction team.
The project will enhance wildlife connectivity while maintaining roadway safety due to the area’s grizzly bear habitats. The project includes the reconstruction of approximately 3.7 miles of US-93 from south of Eagle Pass Trail to Brooke Lane in the Nine pipe National Wildlife Refuge. The team will construct new highway bridges, a wildlife overpass, shared-use path and wildlife fencing, upgrade drainage, and make improvements to roadways and intersections.
“The preconstruction phase is crucial to a smoother construction process," said Jasen Bennie, Senior Vice President and Intermountain Regional Manager for Sundt’s Transportation Group. "We’re excited to collaborate with MDT [Montana Department of Transportation] and CSKT [Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes] on this project to ensure we can deliver necessary infrastructure improvements for the area. And, as longtime proponents of alternate delivery methods, we look forward to demonstrating how the progressive design-build method enhances collaboration, enabling us to successfully meet the project’s goals.”
“Schellinger Construction has a long history of working with MDT and has constructed multiple other portions of Highway 93," said Kyle Schellinger, Vice President for Schellinger Construction. "This project has been a long time coming as one of the last sections of Highway 93 to be reconstructed over the past 30 years. We’re excited to partner with Sundt, MDT, and CSKT in upgrading the roadway and making it safer for the region and be a part of this amazing project.”
Construction is anticipated to commence in early 2027.
