FORT WAYNE, IN – In February, Humane Fort Wayne announced plans to break ground on their future home, a friendly space with expanded opportunities for animal welfare and human education, located on over 5 acres at 901 Leesburg Road, Fort Wayne. The new facility will be centrally located to accommodate more volunteers, increase accessibility to doctors, and will be halfway between Humane’s current facility and their colleague, Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control, from which they receive many of their adoptable animals.

Design Collaborative and Weigand are excited for construction to begin this summer with plans for the new facility to be completed in 2024. As a leader in best practices for compassionate animal care, the new 25,000 square-foot shelter and education center will be three times the size of the current shelter space, will house twice as many cats and dogs, and will allow Humane Fort Wayne to offer new services. Designs for the new facility include an indoor dog training facility, an education center, outdoor play areas, a state-of-the-art spay/neuter and wellness clinic, and an outdoor training center.

Humane’s current space, from which they have served the community for the last 70 years, will undergo renovations to become a headquarters for both outreach and retention programs. This facility will be Indiana’s first, and only free-standing social agency for pets and their people.
