Skanska to Lead Construction of Plant City Technical College in Hillsborough County

TAMPA, FL — Skanska announces the groundbreaking of the new $41 million greenfield construction project, Plant City Technical College in Plant City, Florida. The 52,000-square-foot, two-building project will be the first of its kind for Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) — providing vocational opportunities for both adult trainees and Hillsborough County high school students. Situated on 16 acres, the project allows for up to 900 student stations and is poised to provide ample Career and Technical Educational (CTE) courses that are aligned with growing industries and occupations and meet the needs of the region.

“Across the state of Florida, we are seeing substantial growth and investment in programming and construction for workforce development and CTE facilities that serve as beacons of opportunity, providing essential skills and training to meet the demands of our evolving workforce,” said Daniel Abou-Jaoude, Vice President at Skanska. “As a leading builder in the sector, we look forward to delivering a technical college strategically positioned to impact our growing need for skilled trades in our communities.”

Featuring an innovative design led by Harvard Jolly | PBK, the technical college in Plant City will feature lab spaces, classrooms, and administrative spaces focused on promoting the long-term career growth and sustainable employment of students. Once completed, Plant City Technical College will offer courses in various fields including automotive, computer technology, construction, diesel technology, electrical systems, HVAC systems, and welding. This project is one of the latest workforce development centers announced in the Sunshine State, reflecting the continued demand for careers in skilled trades locally and nationally. The construction of this career center will allow the seventh-largest school district in the country to enhance and expand its post-secondary educational offerings.

The new facility is slated for completion in the fall of 2025.

Skanska has led the construction of various workforce-centered facilities across the state including the Wilton Simpson Technical College in Hernando County and is currently leading the construction on the Leadership Center in Pinellas County.
