Texas Leads the World in Carbon-Sequestered Asphalt for Public Roads

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Texas has taken a significant leap forward in sustainable road construction, with San Antonio pioneering the world's first deployment of carbon-sequestered asphalt on public roads. This project, a collaboration between Modern Hydrogen, Austin-based Road Recyclers, and Bexar County’s Department of Public Works, is a major advancement not just for San Antonio, but for the entire state, setting a precedent for eco-friendly infrastructure.

Modern Hydrogen, at the forefront of decarbonization technologies, has innovated a method to lessen the environmental impact within the asphalt industry. By extracting solid carbon from natural gas, the company produces both clean hydrogen fuel and solid carbon. This solid carbon is then used in asphalt, improving the material’s strength and durability, particularly against climate-induced wear.

“This project transcends local boundaries, offering a blueprint for cities across Texas and beyond in environmental sustainability," said Mothusi Pahl, Vice President of Business Development and Government Affairs at Modern Hydrogen. "Our cost-efficient decarbonization technique, utilizing existing infrastructure, accelerates the shift towards a zero-carbon future, supporting domestic energy security and more economical road construction.”

San Antonio's initiative is pivotal in demonstrating the practicality and advantages of this green asphalt technology. This method substantially reduces both the cost and embodied CO2 of asphalt, contributing significantly to the decarbonization of the natural gas sector, a major CO2 emitter.

This development aims to inspire government entities at all levels, urging the adoption of clean energy and low-carbon strategies in public infrastructure across Texas and beyond.
