“The City Council has moved forward [with] the Boat Basin Dredging near the Corpus Christi Marina between McGee Beach and R-Pier and Breakwater Repairs at McGee Beach," Guajardo said. "This is an important investment to maintain our Marina and our beaches. Protecting and maintaining our natural assets Is an important investment for our city’s future."
The Marina breakwater was initially constructed in the 1920s, and the concrete cap was added in 1946. The breakwater’s concrete cap was re-built in 1981 and is currently experiencing severe structural degradation due to age and environmental exposure. The breakwater improvements will make repairs to the existing stone breakwater and remove and replace the existing concrete cap with one that is two feet wider and one foot taller.
The dredging will help maintain a navigable depth inside the Marina currently being hindered by sediment accumulation. The dredged material will be placed at the Rincon B West Dredge Material Placement Area that is maintained by the Port of Corpus Christi Authority.
