STEP applicants measure their safety processes and policies on 24 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidents. JE Dunn excelled in the Training category, as not only are front line employees trained in safety, but training extends to trade partners as well, as they are also an integral part of the team.
“JE Dunn promotes a safety culture where every employee understands that the well-being of those around them is everyone’s responsibility. We care about the people on our projects more than the projects themselves, and this is showing through the efforts we put forth this year,” said Patrick Dennis, Senior Vice President and Houston Office Lead.
This safety culture starts with top management and permeates through all levels of the company. Despite working in high-risk operations, JE Dunn’s safety record is notably better than the industry average in the three major safety benchmarks:
- Experience Modification Rate: 0.44
- Total Recordable Incident Rate: National 0.89, Regional 0.22
- Days Away: 0.99
“As an industry, it is our responsibility to ensure our workers go home in the same — or better — condition than when they arrived on the jobsite every day,” said Greg Sizemore, ABC Vice President of Health, Safety, Environment, and Workforce Development. “By participating in STEP, JE Dunn’s leadership has demonstrated a commitment to create the conditions for all to do their work without incident. By implementing proactive safety measures, such as toolbox talks and sound substance abuse policies, JE Dunn is committed to consistently raising the bar when it comes to safety performance.”
According to ABC’s annual Safety Performance Report, applying STEP processes dramatically improves safety performance among participants regardless of company size or type of work, and can reduce recordable incidents up to 85 percent, making the best performing companies 680 percent safer than the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average. Ratings range from Diamond, the highest, to Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Participant.
