LONG ISLAND, NY — Langan Engineering and Environmental Services LLC of Parsippany, New Jersey, has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 59th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA). The award comes for the Borden Complex in Long Island City, New York.
Offering dedicated space for warehouse and logistics functions, with separate floors for film and television production, the 900,000-square-foot, five-story facility contributes to the ongoing revitalization of Long Island City. Though celebrated for its accessible location to all five boroughs, the site also presented some less-desirable attributes, including its industrial legacy, environmental contamination, and proximity to active MTA rail infrastructure.
As the project’s site/civil, geotechnical, and environmental engineer, Langan played a key role in overcoming these challenges by implementing innovative and sustainable solutions. The firm navigated the state Brownfield Cleanup Program, proactively secured critical permits, and delivered a cost-effective foundation design tailored to site constraints and seismic and soil conditions, all of which helped maintain the project schedule and budget. Langan also led a comprehensive remediation effort, which included removing underground storage tanks, treating groundwater contamination, and installing systems to prevent vapor intrusion.
Judging for the awards program was conducted by a national 32-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, the media, and academia. Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and excitement generated toward the engineering profession.
All 240 award winners — including 16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards, and the announcement of the Grand Conceptor Award for the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement — will take place at the 2026 EEA Gala at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C.
