JFK Cargo Facility Celebrated in National Engineering Competition

JAMAICA, NY — Langan Engineering and Environmental Services LLC of Parsippany, New Jersey, has earned a National Recognition Award for exemplary engineering achievement in the American Council of Engineering Companies’ (ACEC) 59th annual Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA). The award comes for Air Cargo Facility Building 260 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Jamaica, New York.

The 350,000‑square-foot high‑performance facility improves operational efficiency, introduces advanced environmental systems, and strengthens multimodal connectivity at one of the nation’s busiest air cargo gateways. As the airport’s first significant cargo upgrade in nearly 30 years, the facility improves capacity for planned additional expansion in the northern cargo area, enabling the airport to accommodate expanding freight volumes while aligning with long‑term sustainability and modernization plans.

The site’s significant network of underground utilities required innovative design approaches, utility workarounds, and specialized ground‑improvement methods to support the new building footprint. For a 90‑inch-diameter combined storm/sanitary interceptor — one of New York City’s largest and most critical sewer lines — the project team designed and implemented a major bypass system. The effort required extensive flow‑rate analyses, wet‑/dry‑weather performance evaluations, critically timed construction sequencing, and a highly coordinated approvals process with local and state agencies.

Judging for the awards program was conducted by a national 32-member panel of built environment leaders, along with experts from government, the media, and academia. Award criteria focused on uniqueness and originality, technical innovation, social and economic value, and excitement generated toward the engineering profession.

All 240 award winners — including 16 Honor Awards, eight Grand Awards, and the announcement of the Grand Conceptor Award for the year’s most outstanding overall engineering achievement — will take place at the 2026 EEA Gala at the Grand Hyatt in Washington, D.C.
