NEWARK, NJ — Turner Construction Company announces the commencement of construction for ArtSide and the Chambers Plaza redevelopment, which are part of the expansion of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) campus in Newark, New Jersey. NJPAC is one of the largest performing arts centers in the United States and plays a vital role in enriching the city’s artistic landscape.
Turner’s work on the NJPAC Master Plan Project consists of building a mixed-use, mixed-income residential building, and a redevelopment of the community plaza at the front entrance of the campus.
ArtSide, a new mixed-use, mixed-income residential building designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), will include residential units, office, retail, and cultural spaces. In total, ArtSide will offer 350 rental units, 20 percent of which will be affordable housing. The residential complex will include a fit-out for Newark’s jazz public radio station, WBGO, and a pedestrian-friendly extension of Mulberry Street where NJPAC’s Parking Lot A is located.
The Chambers Plaza project includes a dynamic rebuild of NJPAC’s front entrance. This project includes the addition of space called Essex County Green, which will be a four-season urban outdoor park. The completed project will feature new rain gardens, upgraded lighting, and outdoor seating, making it a versatile area to host year-round outdoor community and arts events.
Turner completed the original NJPAC facility in 1997, and now is tasked with expanding the campus to further enhance the cultural and residential infrastructure of the city of Newark.
