LANSING, MI — U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg recently toured the Michigan Department of Transportation’s (MDOT) US-127/I-496 Rebuilding Michigan project in Ingham County. Buttigieg was joined by Rep. Elissa Slotkin, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor, and several officials from both MDOT and laborers working on the project.

This $205 million investment leverages both Rebuilding Michigan bond funds and federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding to rebuild 3.7 miles of US-127 and I-496, while improving and replacing bridges along each corridor. This project supports MDOT’s overall US-127 corridor improvement goal, aiming to rebuild the corridor through both Clinton and Ingham counties via several phases of work from 2022 through 2028.

The US-127/I-496 project supports commuter, commercial, and tourism traffic, and is credited with supporting 2,481 jobs. Work started with staging in late 2023, with full construction starting in spring 2024. Work is expected to be complete in December 2025.

MDOT is responsible for Michigan’s nearly 10,000-mile state highway system, comprised of all M, I, and US routes. The state owns over 4,700 highway, railroad, and pedestrian bridges, 665 miles of railroad track, roughly 2,700 miles of non-motorized trails, and four airports. Additionally, MDOT administers state and federal transportation programs for aviation, intercity passenger services, rail freight, and local public transit services.
