LANSING, MI — The County Road Association (CRA) of Michigan Engineering Committee presented its 2023 Engineering Awards at the annual County Engineers Workshop in Manistee, Michigan. Doug Mills, PE, Baraga County Road Commission, was presented with the Rural Engineer of the Year Award, and Tim Brown, Saginaw County Road Commission, was named Project Manager of the Year. “CRA’s Engineer of the Year Awards honors those who have dedicated their careers to the pursuit of engineering excellence,” CRA CEO Denise Donohue said. “Doug and Tim have positively impacted their county road and bridge system. They are hardworking and integral members of their road commissions.”

Mills serves as Engineer-Manager of the Baraga County Road Commission, a role he first assumed in 1993. He has long been a member of various committees and work groups for the association. He has served on the CRA board since 2004.

Brown has been with the Saginaw County Road Commission for more than eight years. In 2023, he managed nearly 30 federal aid and county paving projects for the road commission. The annual CRA Engineering Awards recognize county road agency engineers across the state in both rural and urban areas, as well as project managers. The 83 members of the County Road Association of Michigan represent the unified voice for a safe and efficient county transportation infrastructure system in Michigan, including appropriate stewardship of the public’s right-of-way in rural and urban Michigan. Collectively, Michigan’s county road agencies manage 75 percent of all roads in the state, including 90,000 miles of roads and 5,700 bridges. County road agencies also maintain the state’s highway system in 63 counties. Michigan has the nation’s fourth largest local road system.
