Ferrovial Awarded $1.5B I-35 Northeast Expansion Central Project in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, TX — Ferrovial, via its subsidiaries, Ferrovial Construction and Webber, has been selected by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the Interstate 35 Northeast Expansion (NEX) design-build project. The estimated value of the project is more than $1.5 billion with construction starting in 2022 and spanning about six years.

The project consists of the design, construction, and maintenance of approximately 9.5 miles of non-tolled improvements along I-35 including the construction of approximately 18 miles of additional elevated main lanes. I-35 NEX Project spans the cities of San Antonio, Live Oak, Selma, and Schertz, in Bexar and Guadalupe Counties.

The project scope of work consists of construction of elevated managed lanes between the existing main lanes and frontage roads and eight bridges, and the reconstruction and widening of the Loop 1604 general purpose lanes and bridges. It includes more than 800 spans of bridge construction, 4,500 concrete beams, 31 million pounds of steel girders, and six million square feet of bridge decks.

“We look forward to leveraging our respective companies’ strengths and our collective commitment to innovation for the benefit of Texas drivers who use I-35 daily to meet work and family obligations,” said Angel Luis Sanchez, CEO of Ferrovial Construction U.S. “The combination [of] Ferrovial Construction’s track record successfully managing large, complex infrastructure projects in the U.S. with Webber’s strong self-perform capabilities will yield another transformational mobility solution for one of the most congested roadways in our state.”

“I-35 serves as a main artery for travel and international commerce in Texas, in addition to the project itself bringing jobs and economic opportunities to Texans over the next six years and beyond,” said Jose Carlos Esteban, President & CEO of Webber. “We’re proud to have been selected to work with TxDOT on this vital project that will help keep Central Texas moving forward safely and efficiently.”

In Texas, Ferrovial Construction U.S. and Webber have partnered together on five major design-build projects totaling more than $6 billion in construction value, including the $2.1-billion I-635 LBJ Express, $1.5-billion North Tarrant Express Segments 1 and 2, and $1.3-billion I-35W Segment 3A.

The existing I-35 corridor spans approximately 550 miles across the state of Texas from the Mexican border to the Oklahoma state line. As the largest interstate highway connecting Mexico and Canada through the U.S. heartland, the I-35 corridor carries the majority of Mexico’s trade with the U.S. and Canada via commercial trucks.
