Skanska Celebrates The University of Texas at Tyler's School of Medicine Building Completion

TYLER, TX — Skanska recently joined The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) in celebrating the completion of the School of Medicine Building with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Skanska delivered the project in partnership with HGR General Contractors, combining national health care construction expertise with local knowledge and workforce experience.

The event brought together university leadership and state and local leaders to mark the culmination of the three‑year effort. The facility represents the UT System’s seventh medical school and the first of its kind in Northeast Texas.

“This project is about strengthening health care for East Texas,” said Dennis Yung, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Skanska USA Building Texas. “Partnering with UT Tyler on a project of this scale reinforces the university’s role as a regional health care hub and helps advance the pipeline of physicians serving the region.”

The five-story, 250,000-square-foot School of Medicine Building is designed to support interdisciplinary training for nursing students, medical students, and residents. The facility features flexible classrooms and advanced teaching laboratories, including simulation, surgical, and cadaver labs, as well as spaces for both collaborative and hands-on training.

In addition to the academic building, the project includes a seven-story parking garage with an integrated facilities office and a skybridge connecting the new construction to the existing hospital.

“The completion of the School of Medicine Building is a transformative milestone for our region,” UT Tyler President Julie V. Philley, MD, said. “Years from now, we will look back on this moment as one where a university, its partners, and its community stepped forward together to create something that will leave a lasting impact on the health of our region.”

The School of Medicine Building is expected to play a key role in expanding medical education and training opportunities in Northeast Texas, supporting UT Tyler’s mission to address regional workforce needs and improve access to care across East Texas communities.
