SARASOTA, FL — PCL Construction, Inc.’s Lift Station 87 project in Sarasota, Florida, has earned an Envision Silver Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.
The award is based on performance across a set of 64 credits including quality of life, stakeholder engagement, project management, community planning, energy, water, land use, ecological impacts, pollution, climate vulnerability, and systems integration, among others.
PCL was recognized for several sustainability efforts, including recycling 100 percent of existing concrete, incorporating more than 1 million pounds of recycled material into building materials, reusing vertical pumps and generators, and minimizing legacy tree removal.
“The purpose of Envision is to foster a dramatic and necessary improvement in the sustainable performance and resiliency of infrastructure,” said Anthony Kane, President and CEO of the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. “It is an honor for the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure to recognize the Lift Station 87 - City of Sarasota, Florida, project as a leader in sustainable infrastructure.”

Located on a compact lot close to the downtown main attractions and busy roadways, Lift Station 87 station was built to withstand a Category 3 hurricane and the accompanying storm surge. It has six 125-horsepower pumps with auxiliary backup systems, an odor control system, and both onsite and offsite tie-ins to the existing transmission main. The lift station’s foundation is located 41 feet below sea level, while the top of the structure sits at 70 feet of elevation for a total structure height of 111 feet.
