The renovation required the existing dock to be removed. The overall concrete cut was 1000 feet by 20 feet wide and 22-29 inches deep. The slab was cut into smaller sections for safe lift-out and removal. The removed concrete dock makes room for the upgraded foundation to support the new cranes and other upgrades.
The LASH dock was also demolished. LASH stands for “lighter aboard ship” and is a way to transport barges, or lighters, on special transport ships. This included sections of the access bridges, dolphins, and dredging of the areas along the fender line. ATI wire sawed the cap and beams/piers, and core drilled the precast panel that made up the 18-inch thick deck. Part of the job specification was no debris could fall into the water. This required extensive planning and execution but was handled safely and professionally by ATI’s crew.
